Few things in life are as satisfying as biting into a fresh, warm everything bagel. The rich medley of flavors, textures, and aromas it offers has made it a favorite among bagel enthusiasts worldwide.

Today we’ll explore the origins, ingredients and health benefits of this delightful bagel that truly has it all.

The Birth of the Everything Bagel

The everything bagel is the brainchild of an ambitious baker who dared to dream big. Its invention dates back to the 1980s, in a small bakery nestled in the heart of New York City. The idea was simple: combine all the best elements of other popular bagels into one ultimate creation.

Ingredients

The secret behind the everything bagel’s irresistible appeal lies in its diverse array of toppings. From nutty sesame seeds and crunchy poppy seeds to aromatic garlic and onion flakes, the everything bagel offers a veritable symphony of flavors. As if that wasn’t enough, coarse salt adds a savory touch that ties everything together.

A Classic Foundation

Underneath the dazzling array of toppings, the everything bagel features a classic, chewy bagel base. Made from a simple blend of flour, water, yeast, and a hint of malt, this traditional foundation provides the perfect canvas for the bagel’s elaborate flavor profile.

Health Benefits

Despite its indulgent taste, the everything bagel boasts several health benefits. Packed with fiber, vitamins, and minerals, this versatile breakfast option offers a wholesome and satisfying meal. In the following sections, we’ll delve into the specific nutritional components that make the everything bagel a smart choice for health-conscious eaters.

Building Blocks for a Healthy Body

Thanks to the various seeds adorning its surface, the everything bagel is an excellent source of plant-based protein. Protein is crucial for building and repairing tissues, as well as maintaining proper immune system function. Incorporating this delicious treat into your morning routine can provide your body with the essential amino acids it needs to stay strong and healthy.

Digestive Health and Beyond

The everything bagel’s hearty blend of seeds offers an impressive amount of dietary fiber. Consuming adequate fiber promotes healthy digestion, prevents constipation, and can even help lower cholesterol levels. Additionally, the fiber in everything bagels can help you feel full longer, making it a satisfying choice for those watching their weight.

Vitamins and Minerals

The diverse toppings on an everything bagel are more than just flavorful; they’re also packed with essential vitamins and minerals. For instance, sesame and poppy seeds are rich in calcium and magnesium, which are vital for strong bones and teeth. Meanwhile, onion and garlic provide a healthy dose of immune-boosting antioxidants and essential B vitamins.

The Everything Bagel is my favorite because it offers a delightful blend of flavors and textures in every bite, thanks to the generous mix of toppings. It makes the perfect balance between savory and slightly nutty, making it a versatile option for a variety of spreads and fillings. Additionally, the everything bagel looks great with its colorful seeds and spices, adding to the overall enjoyment.

Make It Your Own

One of the best things about the everything bagel is its versatility. You can customize it to suit your personal tastes or dietary preferences by adding or removing toppings. Whether you prefer it toasted with a schmear of cream cheese or piled high with veggies and smoked salmon, there’s an everything bagel combination for everyone.

A large everything bagel.

The Everything Bagel Experience

The everything bagel is more than just a breakfast staple; it’s a celebration of flavors, textures, and nutrients. Its unique combination of ingredients makes it a delicious and nutritious choice that can be customized to your liking.

An Everything Bagel Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/4 cups warm water (110-115°F)
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 3 1/2 cups bread flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup cornmeal (for dusting)

Everything Bagel Topping:

  • 2 tablespoons poppy seeds
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon dried minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon dried minced onion
  • 1 teaspoon coarse sea salt

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, active dry yeast, and granulated sugar. Stir until dissolved and let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine bread flour and salt. Add the frothy yeast mixture and mix until a dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add more flour, a tablespoon at a time, until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 10 minutes. Form the dough into a ball and place it in a bowl greased with vegetable oil. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
  4. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lightly dust with cornmeal.
  5. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a smooth ball and then shape it into a bagel by poking a hole in the center and gently stretching it out.
  6. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Boil the bagels for 1 minute on each side (this step is crucial for the bagels to develop their signature chewy texture).
  7. In a small bowl, mix together the poppy seeds, sesame seeds, dried minced garlic, dried minced onion, and coarse sea salt to create the everything bagel topping.
  8. As you remove the boiled bagels from the pot, immediately dip the top side of each bagel into the everything bagel topping mixture, pressing gently to help the toppings stick.
  9. Place the bagels, topping-side up, onto the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the bagels are golden brown and crusty on the outside.
  10. Remove the bagels from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving. Enjoy your homemade everything bagels with your favorite spread or toppings!
